Festive Beauty Trends

by Safeera Kaka

Turn your makeup game up a notch this festive season by incorporating some of 2019’s hottest trends. You can wear these looks to an office party, a festive lunch or ring in the New Year in style. We saw everything on the runways this year, from bold eyes and even bolder lips. I have rounded up a list of my favorite beauty trends for 2019, try these out and sparkle your way into the New Year.

The trend: Euphoria inspired makeup

Euphoria is an HBO television series that has garnered critical reviews for its portrayal of teens. The bigger impact of the show is the characters and their unique sense of style. The show’s makeup artist, Doniella Davy, created makeup looks that include rhinestones, glitter, graphics liner, and colourful eyeshadow. These looks have taken the beauty world by storm. From the small screen to Fashion Week and YouTube, we are seeing Euphoria inspired makeup everywhere. This is the perfect time of year to experiment with this look, especially try the rhinestone trend for New Year’s Eve.

Spotted on:  Zendaya, Desi Perkins, Katy Perry

How to wear this look: The most popular way of wearing this look is using rhinestones around the eyes. Keep the rest of your makeup neutral and attach the rhinestones with lash glue. I find tiny rhinestones used for nail art gives the best effect. If you want to keep it a bit more subdued, attach a tiny rhinestone in the inner corner of the eyes.

If diamante eyelids are still a bit much for a Christmas lunch with the in-laws, try the gorgeous STILA Magnificent Metals Eyeshadows. Just dab some over the lids for a gorgeous sparkle.

The Trend: Green Eyeshadow

Attends the “Loveless (Nelyubov)” screening during the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 18, 2017, in Cannes, France.

Brown-eyed babes this one’s for you, a sweep of green shadow on the lids makes the brown in your eyes really stand out.

Green eyeshadow is part of the neon trend that we have been seeing everywhere. Last year we saw too many, no makeup looks and this year makeup artists are keeping the skin clean but playing with bright colours.  Neon makeup made its debut on the SS runways at Ana Sui, Rodarte, and Carolina Herrera.

Spotted on: Kendall Jenner, Issa Rae, Gisel Bundchen, Lala Anthony.

How to wear this look: If you’re not keen on a full neon moment, try an olive-green eyeshadow on the lids. Also lining the top and bottom lids with a bright green liner will draw attention to the eyes. Try this Dior Happy 2020 eyeshadow palette called Party in Colours.

Bold Lipstick

You cannot go wrong with a bold lip this festive season. A bright red lip, pared with full brows and dewy skin is the ultimate look for any party or get together. I spotted bold red lips at the Valentino show. Sies Marjan did an exaggerated version of this look by sending models down the runway with ruby red lips and a cherry red gloss. Go for an orange-tinged red for a Summery twist.

Seen on: Lupita Nyong’o, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rihanna

How to wear this trend: Keep the rest of your makeup simple, line your lips with a lip pencil and fill in with your preferred lipstick, my personal favorite is Ruby Woo from MAC. To update this look add a swipe of clear lip gloss.

The trend: A French Manicure

Everything about the ’90s is trending at the moment. We’ve seen 90’s fashion and beauty have quite a moment in the spotlight. Why not channel the 90’s with your manicure and opt for some french tips. According to Betina Goldstein, lead manicurist for Essie a chic way to update a chunky french manicure is to paint a very dainty line that goes around the top of the nail.

Seen on: Beyonce,  Ariana Grande, Bella Hadid, Camilla Cabello

How to wear this look: Try pastel tips instead of stark white, a metallic foil tip or an ombre glitter to update your french mani. Black polish on the tips also gives your manicure an edgier look.
