How to mentally prepare yourself for December

by Thando Mgobhozi

Every year around this time a lot of people suffer from year-end fatigue and usually use this time of the year to relax and unwind which is not a problem at all. This, however, is also a time where people make reckless decisions that they end up regretting earlier on in the following year. I mean let’s face it, it’s almost as if we lose our minds for a bit around festive season time because “ke December boss” so who cares anyway right?

The reality is that December will not last forever and even though it’s a special month, it is really just like any other month of the year. There are goals, targets, and tasks that need to be met and achieved so if you have not met or achieved these goals and targets then you need to make sure that they are completed before the year ends. Don’t start to hold back or procrastinate because your mind automatically goes into relaxation mode in December. This is actually the time when you should be working the hardest or as they say “work smart.”

Prepare your mind to always stay in the game no matter what time of the year it is. If you have already achieved what you wanted to achieve for the year then make this your time to set your goals for the coming year so that you already have a head start when the new year eventually arrives. Don’t wait to fully settle into the new year and then only start to plan what you want for the year. We all know how it goes once a new year arrives and we think we have plenty of time to plan and decide what we want because the year is still long. Once you have that mentality, you will never get things done and it just shows a lack of commitment from your side and come year-end, you haven’t achieved anything valuable for yourself.

Don’t ever make the mistake of thinking that you have all the time in the world to live the life that you really want because time will fly by within a blink of an eye and you’ll keep wondering how that happened when you wake up one day and you’re still so far from where you want to be. Take each and every day as an opportunity to get closer and closer to your dreams and to make them a reality.

Every day when you wake up is an opportunity to achieve a goal and learn something new because if we’re being honest there is no day that does not count, each and every day under the sun is just as important as the days to come. Make the most of it because you don’t know what the future holds.

It is not to say that taking a break here and it is not important. Rest if you must and get back to it. Everything just fluctuates especially this time of the year in a lot of ways whether it is financially, emotionally, physically and so on. You may end up spending more than you planned to for example and find yourself broke right at the beginning of the year. All these things, need one to be mentally prepared for times like this. It is as good as taking 2 steps forward and another 3 steps back when you do not prepare your mind for things like this.

Many successful people are successful because they have never lost sight of their goals and were always working tirelessly towards achieving them no matter the occasion. At the end of the day, it really depends on how badly you want what you want and how much work you’re willing to put in to get there. If you truly want it, then you will not be afraid to go for it.

I urge you to take time to yourself this December right now, right where you are, if you’re reading this. I want you to reflect on the year and what it has been for you. Are you closer to where you’re headed or even further than before? Think about December 2020. Where are you at that point in your life? Will things be different for you around this time next year? Before you go and drink your life away, I need you to think about all these things that I’ve mentioned.
